The new 41,000 sq. ft. property is located in Colombo, and has been designed as a highly specialized facility requiring a high level of technical expertise to construct. A two-storey addition to an existing two-story heritage building with major upgrades to the existing building for a total building gross area of 25,500 sq. ft. The redevelopment of the property will include office and representational spaces, a guardhouse, a new perimeter wall, exterior landscaping, and all associated work required for these areas.

The redesigned block will provide office space for the Senate and the House of Commons, it will allow for the future consolidation of parliamentary accommodations, including the Library of Parliament. It will also include renovated retail space on the Sparks Street Mall. As a site of national importance, the project carries a responsibility not only to provide the facilities for democratic government and urban infrastructure, but also to represent the values of a nation and a vision for its sustainable and inclusive future. The project proposes a new public square adjacent to this building and on axis with the parliament’s Peace Tower.

This landmark project will serve as Parks Canada's primary operations base to ensure the ecologically sustainable use and cultural heritage of this national marine conservation area for generations to come. The centre will also welcome Canadians and visitors from around the world, facilitating meaningful visitor experiences by sharing the rich history of Indigenous peoples and coastal communities in the area. The Administration and Visitor Centre is anticipated to open to the public in 2026.

The primary focus of the renewal of the Daniel J. MacDonald Building is to modernize the building, the new design will also aim to increase workspace to accommodate a capacity of 900. The project will also benefit the environment by reducing the carbon footprint of the building through enhanced electrical, heating, ventilation and air conditioning systems.
